Women's Hoops Begin Postseason at Home
Following a 22-win season and a trip to the Conference USA Championship title game, the Tulane University women's basketball team was rewarded with an at-large berth to the 2011 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The Green Wave will take on in-state foe Southern University on Thursday (March 17) at 7 p.m. in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
“We're excited to be playing in the postseason and very excited about playing at home,” says Tulane head women's basketball coach Lisa Stockton. “With Southern being just a little over an hour away, their fans are likely to travel so it'll be a great atmosphere for a postseason game.”
Tickets are available through the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office with student tickets selling for $4, while general admission and floor seats are available for $6 and $16, respectively. The ticket office is located on the first floor of the James W. Wilson Jr. Center on the uptown campus, and tickets can be purchased in person, over the phone at 504-861-9283 and online.
Tulane enters the 2011 WNIT with a 22-10 overall record. Along the way, the Green Wave enjoyed an eight-game winning streak from Dec. 20 through Jan. 16. The team picked up its first win over a nationally ranked opponent since 2003 with an upset of regular-season C-USA champions and No. 22-ranked University of Houston, 70-60, in the C-USA Championship semifinals on Saturday (March 12) in El Paso, Texas.
As a team, the Green Wave are averaging 72.9 points, 38.6 rebounds, 15.8 assists, 9.8 steals and 4.8 blocks per game. Senior forward Danielle Nunn averages 15.5 points per outing in scoring, while senior point guard Roshaunda Barnes scores 12.9 points per game.
The winner of the Tulane/Southern contest will advance to take on the winner of Thursday's game in Fort Worth, Texas, between Texas Christian and Oral Roberts universities.
