Tulane Signs Memorandum of Understanding with El Colegio de Mexico

Tulane University will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with El Colegio de México, a prestigious institute of higher education in Mexico City, at 5 p.m., Nov. 18 in the Kendall Cram Room on the second floor of Tulane"s Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life.

The memorandum, which will be signed by Tulane President Scott Cowen and Javier Garciadiego, president of El Colegio de México, will formalize educational cooperation and exchange between the institutions while also expanding the basis for friendship between Mexico and the U.S. The agreement will enable the two universities to organize joint academic and scientific activities and promote the exchange of students, research and teaching personnel.

The signing will be one of the highlights of “Mexico at a Crossroads: Learning from History, Facing the Future,” a conference hosted by both institutions from 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17 and from 8:30 to 5 p.m. Nov. 18 on the second floor of Tulane"s Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life.

The conference will include panel discussions addressing economic growth and equity, demographic change and migration, democracy and elections and security and drug trafficking, as well as other issues of historical, political and economic relevance to contemporary Mexico.

All conference sessions are free and open to the public, except the luncheon keynote address on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 12:45 pm. The cost to attend the keynote luncheon address is $20 for the general public and $10 for university students. The keynote luncheon address will given be Ambassador Julian Ventura, under secretary for North America, in the Kendall Cram Room.

Another keynote lecture will be given by Jaime Serra-Puche, the former minister of Trade and Treasury for Mexico at 3:30 p.m., Nov. 18 in the Kendall Cram Room. Serra-Puche led the negotiation and implementation of the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). He also headed free trade agreements with Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia and Costa Rica. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Tulane and El Colegio de México will follow his address.
