The Middle American Research Institute (MARI) in the School of Liberal Arts has received a $1.5 million grant from the Hitz Foundation to conduct innovative archaeological research on the Maya civilization of Mexico and Central America. The grant increases the ability of MARI’s Geographic Information Systems Lab to use lidar technology, which reveals changes in topography and enables archaeologists to identify human-made structures.

Tulane undergraduates will have three new options for minors in the School of Science and Engineering for the fall semester: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and materials engineering. Tiong Aw, associate professor at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM) and a ByWater Institute fellow, focuses on research pertaining to wastewater systems and public health. His research was vital to virus detection in wastewater during the pandemic. He will now focus on the relationship between water quality, public health and climate change in coastal areas. The New Orleans Book Festival at Tulane University will return Thursday, March 27, to Saturday, March 29, 2025. The festivities will kick off with opening sessions on Thursday, followed by a full lineup of programming on Friday and Saturday. In commemoration of Earth Day on Monday, April 22, the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM) will host Marianthi-Anna Kioumourtzoglou, associate professor of environmental health sciences at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Kioumourtzoglou will discuss climate change and its health effects on people living in the Gulf South. The discussion will take place at noon in Diboll Auditorium. The Murphy Institute’s Center for Ethics will welcome Subramanian Rangan, professor of strategy and management at INSEAD, one of the world’s largest graduate business schools founded in Fontainebleau, France, for the third installment of the center’s Public Lecture Series. Rangan will discuss “The Pareto Trap: How Fairness Got Sacrificed at the Altar of Efficiency and How We Might Resurrect It.” The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will take place Friday, April 19, at 4 p.m. in the Myra Clare Rogers Memorial Chapel.
