A Tulane University initiative to use shuttle buses powered by electricity has been awarded $737,500 by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). The project is one of 55 selected research and demonstration projects that will further new and innovative advanced vehicle technologies with assistance from the EERE’s Vehicle Technologies Office.

Richard Campanella, associate dean for research and professor at the School of Architecture, leads students on free walking tours throughout certain areas of the city, giving an in-depth and up-close look at the city’s urban geography, architecture, history and culture along the way. The tours are outside and socially distanced, with all attendees required to wear a mask. The tours are limited to 12 students at a time.

Many have worked remotely this year, but few as far from home as Robert Allen, who teaches in the Tulane School of Professional Advancement’s (SoPA) Emergency and Security Studies Program. A United States Marine veteran and a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard, Allen is currently deployed in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq as a member of the 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Louisiana Army National Guard. He serves as the public affairs officer, spokesperson and civil affairs officer.

Haunted by memories of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation, an alumni couple with deep ties to Tulane and New Orleans has made a $2 million gift to the university that aims to pack a one-two punch against climate change and coastal erosion. David and Jane Flowerree have established two professorships aimed at finding solutions to the environmental crisis facing Louisiana and other areas threatened by rising seas, warming temperatures, and weather-driven disasters.

Tulane University Special Collections (TUSC) is pleased to announce an expanded mission and new name for its famed music archive. Previously known as the Hogan Jazz Archive, the reconceived Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz will expand the scope of its collections, including acquisitions that document late 20th century and 21st-century contemporary jazz, rhythm and blues, funk, hip hop and rock musicians in New Orleans and the surrounding region, as well as the industry and culture that fosters and supports those artists.
