Amistad celebrates 52 years with ‘Soundtrack of New Orleans’
The Amistad Research Center will honor local civic and community leaders during the “Soundtrack of New Orleans,” a celebration of the city’s unique history, culture and music. The event takes place at the historic Orpheum Theater on Friday, Sept. 28, at 6:30 p.m.
“New Orleans is recognized for many things, but most notably, it’s our unique culture that sets us apart from other American cities,” said Kara Olidge, executive director of the Amistad Research Center. “Our songs, our food, our language, our dances, and most notably, our sounds are known and revered across the world.”
Paired with the celebration of New Orleans’ tricentennial, the Amistad Research Center will host “Soundtrack of New Orleans” in recognition of its 52nd anniversary.
This year’s honorees will include: Arts and Culture Award recipients, The Marsalis Family; Civic Leadership Award recipient, Alden J. McDonald Jr., President and CEO of Liberty Bank; and Community Service Award recipient Vera Warren Williams, founder of Community Bookstore.
Event guests will also enjoy performances by jazz flautist and musical composer, Claudia Hayden, along with Germaine Bazzle, Deacon John Moore, Sheila Kay Davis, Sharon Martin, Michaela Harrison and the Rebirth Brass Band.
