Oak Street Renaissance

The commercial stretch of Oak Street between Carrollton and Leake avenues has been one of the uptown area's little main streets for decades. The people who live, work and hang out on the street speak of it with reverence and pride. It is currently undergoing a major overhaul, portrayed in this video.

The city hired Fleming Construction in March to make Oak Street new again. The 55-year-old company from Jefferson Parish is upgrading sewers and drainage, repaving sidewalks, installing storm drains and replacing historic street-name tiles at each intersection. They also are planting trees and installing bicycle racks and benches at the intersections. The construction project, which will cost $5.4 million, is slated to end in November.

The Oak Street retail area in the university neighborhood is undergoing changes, shown in this video photographed and produced by Brandon Meginley, a senior majoring in journalism at Tulane University.
