Calling all Green Wave fans. It"s time to get ready for the grand opening of Yulman Stadium.
“Tailgate training” with special tips on that fine art along with a cooking demonstration is just one among a bunch of events with lots of giveaways leading up to the inaugural game on Saturday, Sept. 6, in the completely new stadium on the Tulane University uptown campus.
“I think Yulman Stadium is a big, big boost for us, for New Orleans and the uptown community.” -- Curtis “C.J.” Johnson, head football coach
“Tailgate Training,” an event especially for alumni, will take place on Thursday (Aug. 28) from 6 until 9:30 p.m. at the Tulane Alumni House on Willow Street. The indoor and outdoor event will feature a TV viewing party of the Green Wave"s away-game season opener against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team. President Mike Fitts will be there for his first official Tulane football game. Among the mementos to be given away will be commemorative cups and fan guides. Tickets to home games at Yulman Stadium will be on sale. And the Team Shop will have a mobile unit onsite to sell Green Wave gear. To attend, RSVP online.
That same night, students can see the season-opening, televised Tulane vs. Tulsa football game at “Watch the Wave” in Der Rathskeller in the Lavin-Bernick Center from 6:30 until 9 p.m. Posters and fan guides, along with free food and soft drinks, will be offered. The Tulane Bookstore also will give away swag, including stress footballs, sunglasses and shakers.
But before the tailgate training, on Wednesday (Aug. 27) there will be a “Welcome Neighbors” gathering from 6 until 7:30 p.m. at the Wilson Atrium. Neighbors are invited to tour the new stadium and learn more about game day logistics. Face painting and temporary tattoos for kids and cups and other giveaways for adults, including free food and adult beverages, will be available. Tulane gear also will be available for purchase.
And that"s just this week.
Next week, on Tuesday (Sept. 2), from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m., at “In the Land of the Wave,” Tulane students will meet at Brown Field and Yulman Stadium to claim their tickets for Saturday"s football game. There will be friendly, competitive games for those who want to play. Cheerleaders and student-athletes will lead cheers. And students will have the opportunity to tour the stadium. Food trucks will be onsite, and students can pick up their commemorative T-shirts and tank tops and fun sunglasses. Handheld paper fans with the words to the Green Wave fight song, cheers and the Tulane alma mater printed on them also will be distributed.
Faculty, graduate and professional students, and staff members will have a special opportunity to tour the stadium on Thursday (Sept. 4) from 4 until 6 p.m., at an “Open House.” There will be music, snacks and beverages along with giveaways of shirts and cups at the Wilson Center Atrium. Parking will be available in the Rosen Lot.
And, then, what everyone is waiting for: the official opening of Yulman Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 6). The Georgia Tech vs. Green Wave game begins at 3 p.m. CT. Tailgating, for real, starts at 11 a.m. on the uptown campus.
