The School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and the School of Social Work will welcome John M. Wallace, vice provost for faculty diversity and development at the University of Pittsburgh, for a lecture on Friday, Oct. 6, at noon. Wallace will present the lecture “Using Research to Change the World (Or At Least Improve a Neighborhood)” in Room 343 of the School of Social Work, located at 127 Elk Place. Wallace’s work focuses on the well-being of African American children, youth and communities. He launched “Comm-Univer-City” of Pittsburgh Project, a community-university partnership that integrates Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work’s research and teaching to investigate social problems. Louisiana folklorist Nick Spitzer, an anthropology professor at the School of Liberal Arts, is among nine 2023 National Heritage Fellows honored by the National Endowment for the Arts. Spitzer has hosted the popular radio show “American Routes” for the past 25 years. The show has featured interviews with Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, Fats Domino and 1,200 other figures in American music and culture.
