Tulane trauma expert Charles Figley is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on mental health challenges facing members of the military, both veterans and active-duty personnel. In honor of Veterans Day Saturday, Nov. 11, he shares his expertise in Stranger at Home: A Blueprint for Healing the Psychological Wounds of War, a documentary that will air this month on PBS stations across the nation. Figley, a military veteran himself, appears in the film along with military veterans Mark Russell, a PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) expert, and Steven Elliott, who was involved in the friendly fire incident that killed former NFL star-turned-Army Ranger Pat Tillman in Afghanistan in 2004. The Modigliani Quartet is recognized as one of today’s most sought-after quartets, featuring regularly in prominent international series and on the world’s most prestigious stages. On Monday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m., the Modigliani Quartet will perform at Dixon Hall as part of the New Orleans Friends of Music chamber musician series. Founded in 2003, the Modigliani Quartet features Amaury Coeytaux and Loïc Rio on violins, Laurent Marfaing on viola and François Kieffer on cello. Researchers at Tulane University studied more than 400,000 adults in the United Kingdom over 12 years and found that compared to people who “never or rarely” added salt to foods, those who “sometimes” added salt had a 13% higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
