The experience of Mason Angel (left), a 2018 Tulane graduate, volunteering in New Orleans’ public schools helped inspire a $1.3 million gift to create an endowed fellowship in the university’s Department of Economics. Tulane’s fifth annual report card on New Orleans area startups and small businesses found that the sector is weathering tough times fairly well but needs more help finding investment money. Rob Lalka, executive director of the Albert Lepage Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the A. B. Freeman School of Business who initiated the study in 2019, says speeding state seed funding to small businesses would help them compete in tough times.
