In celebration of National Chess Day last semester, people from ages 10 to 75 gathered in the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life for the first Tulane Quick Chess Tournament, which was the largest all-ages United States Chess Federation tournament in Louisiana since 2018.

Becki Kondkar, director of the Tulane Law School Domestic Violence Clinic and founding co-director of the law school’s Women’s Prison Project, has been awarded the Association of American Law Schools’ 2024 Pro Bono Access to Justice Award, which recognizes one individual or program nationwide each year for their role in removing barriers to justice for those who are unable to afford legal representation. An email was sent to the Tulane community this week announcing that the university will welcome a new dining partner, Aramark Collegiate Hospitality, beginning in July. This partnership follows an extensive competitive bidding process that included direct input from students, faculty and staff to enhance the overall dining experience on Tulane’s three campuses by focusing on enhanced food quality, expanded food options, workforce development and sustainability efforts. The Newcomb Art Museum at Tulane will celebrate the opening of three new exhibitions for spring 2024 with a preview, talk and reception on Wednesday, Jan. 18, beginning at 5 p.m. The exhibitions are “Legacy Traces: Recent Additions to the Museum Collection,” “Victory Workers” and “William Edmondson: A Monumental Vision.” Each exhibition represents different themes related to the museum’s mission to build upon its institutional legacy and highlight contributions of artists of the American South. Scholar Jennifer Marshall will give a talk on Edmondson, a renowned 20th century visionary artist and folk sculptor. The exhibitions will be on view through June 1. According to a new economic impact study from Tulane University, for every dollar the city of New Orleans invested in Mardi Gras last year, it saw a $2.64 return. The total direct impact of Mardi Gras 2023 on the city’s economy is pegged at $891,202,780, according to the report, representing more than 300% of growth since 2009.
