Endocrinologist and former Tulane researcher Dr. Andrew Schally has donated his Nobel Prize to Tulane University School of Medicine, where it will soon be put on display to inspire the next generation of researchers. After receiving the award in 1977, his continued research led to the development of the preferred treatment method for advanced prostate cancer and groundbreaking discoveries in contraception, diabetes and depression.

Dr. Lu Qi, interim chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, authored a study that indicates addressing social isolation or loneliness may decrease the mortality risk among people with obesity. The Asian Studies Program at the School of Liberal Arts, in partnership with the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library and the School of Medicine Physician/Scientist Program, will host the Drepung Gomang Monastery monks as they create a sand mandala, an ornate drawing made of sand. An opening ceremony will take place Monday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m. in room 501 of the library. The monks will return each day that week to continue their work. On Saturday, Feb. 24, at 10:30 a.m., a closing ceremony will take place, and the monks will travel to Audubon Riverview Park, known as “The Fly,” to pour out the sand. Visit the
