Tulane has received a $2 million gift from alumnus Mark Wheeler and his wife, musician Amelia Archer, to create the Mark D. Wheeler Chair in Artificial Intelligence Endowed Fund at the Tulane School of Science and Engineering. The gift will further position Tulane as a leader in developing AI as a positive force for transforming higher education and solving some of the world’s most pressing problems.

Tulane alum Ashley Langford has been named head coach of the Tulane Women’s Basketball program. Langford, who was a standout point guard for the Green Wave from 2005-2009, becomes the team’s seventh head coach and the first African American to lead the program. Read more on the Athletics website.

The Murphy Institute’s Center for Public Policy Research, the Tulane School of Architecture, the A. B. Freeman School of Business and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta will host a two-day research symposium on housing policy Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13. The event will bring together experts in housing, lending, policy and community development to explore solutions to the nation’s most pressing housing challenges. The first day of the event will take place at the New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute, located at 725 Howard Ave., and the second day will take place at the Goldring/Woldenberg Business Complex, located on the uptown campus. Martin Davies, director of the Maritime Law Center at Tulane, explains the Limitation of Liability Act of 1851, also known as the “Titanic Law,” that allows a shipowner to petition its limit of liability. Davies says he would be shocked if the shipowners involved in the cargo ship crash in Baltimore do not evoke this law in their situation.
