At the Tulane University Unified Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 20, the Class of 2023 gathered in Yulman Stadium to celebrate their academic achievements. The ceremony included a football-themed address from President Michael A. Fitts, a keynote address from Tony and Grammy Award winner Leslie Odom, Jr. on the importance of “doing the work,” remarks from Class of 2023 student speakers, the presentation of Commencement honors and more.

The School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine will host a workshop for those interested in understanding the ways intersectionality can be applied to quantitative methods and mixed methods in health research. The event takes place on Thursday, May 25, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Tidewater Building, Room 1206. The workshop will be presented by Intersectionality Training Institute, whose mission is to advance health equity and social justice by providing high-quality training in the application of intersectionality to health research, policy and practice. The event is co-sponsored by Tulane Center of Excellence Maternal and Child Health, Mary Amelia Center for Women’s Health Equity Research, the Violence Prevention Institute, and the Center for Youth Equity. “While it surely will cost to address health inequities, there are also substantial costs associated with not addressing them. Health inequities is a social justice issue, but it is also an economic issue,” says Thomas LaVeist, dean of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. LaVeist was commenting on a study he led that revealed that racial and ethnic health disparities cost the U.S. economy $451 billion in 2018.
