Alumni association sends scholars on the road
“Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans” is a familiar song for many Tulane University alumni who have strong connections to the city and the university. To reinforce those relationships, the Tulane Alumni Association is taking its Scholars Series to alumni clubs.
“The alumni association board decided to bring some of the Tulane faculty members on the road and into the cities, to talk about their interesting work,” said Jered Bocage, director of alumni programs.
The program began on May 27 when geographer Rich Campanella addressed the alumni club in San Francisco. A senior professor of practice in the School of Architecture, Campanella is the author of numerous books and articles about the history and human geography of New Orleans, as well as the impact of Hurricane Katrina.
On June 19, Dr. Tim Harlan spoke to the alumni club in Chicago. Harlan, also known as Dr. Gourmet on his healthy eating website, is a Tulane internist and executive director of the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine. The teaching kitchen, one of the nation"s first culinary medicine programs, is affiliated with the Tulane School of Medicine.
Alumni in the Palm Beach club in Boca Raton, Florida, learned about the stock market and the outlook for regional stocks on June 29 from A. B. Freeman School of Business professor Peter Ricchiuti. He is founder and director of Burkenroad Reports, a program that gives students stock analysis experience by researching and writing reports on regional small-cap companies.
And on Aug. 9, Monica RamÃrez-Montagut, director of the Newcomb Art Museum, will travel to Miami Beach, Florida, to speak at an alumni club brunch in conjunction with an exhibit on Newcomb Pottery at the Wolfsonian-Florida International University museum. The event is cohosted by the Newcomb Alumnae Association.
The reaction to the programs? “Oh my goodness, people love it,” Bocage said. “They definitely want more of this.”
The Tulane Alumni Association has more than 60 active clubs across the globe.
