A short 17 miles away from the Tulane University uptown campus, nestled next to the Mississippi River, there is a place that feels like it is a world away. A Studio in the Woods sits on a little less than eight acres where sculptures are tucked away amidst the forest.

The mission statement of the studio reflects the passions of founders Joe and Lucianne Carmichael — preserving nature and fostering art and artists. Since 2003, A Studio in the Woods has offered residencies to artists from around the world. Five years ago, the Carmichaels donated the land and studio to Tulane.
