Tulane first-year student Gavin Blair receives ashes during noon Mass on Ash Wednesday at the Father McInnes Center for Catholic Life. Always the day after Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday marks the first day of the Lenten season of prayer and repentance, observed by Christians worldwide. Ashes are often made by burning palm leaves from the previous year’s Palm Sunday observance.
