Diversity Convocation to feature ‘The Root’ editor
Damon Young, editor of The Root and co-founder of Very Smart Brothas, will join the Tulane community on Oct. 15 as the guest speaker for the 2018 Diversity Convocation.
The event, hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs (the O), will take place in the Kendall Cram Lecture Hall at 6 p.m. on the uptown campus.
Sienna Abdulahad, associate director of the O, explained that the purpose of convocation is to put issues of diversity and inclusion at the forefront of conversation. Local political and social issues are analyzed within a broader national context, forcing the audience to think outside themselves and their own personal experiences.
“Sometimes, bringing in a speaker from the outside to talk to us and engage with the community really does contextualize the experience for students on campus,” Abdulahad said. “It’s a way to bring home the realities outside of Tulane.”
Beginning with an interview conducted by Hullabaloo editor-in-chief Canela Lopez, the 2018 diversity convocation will showcase Young as he shares his thoughts on various issues related to the political climate. A question-and-answer session will follow the interview, and the event will conclude with a reception.
