Program brings renowned writers to Tulane

For 30 years, the Zale-Kimmerling Writer-in-Residence Program has brought renowned women writers to Tulane University. Meg Wolitzer is this year’s addition to the long list of accomplished authors.

Wolitzer is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels The Interestings, The Uncoupling, The Ten-Year Nap, The Position, The Wife, This is My Life and Sleepwalking. She is also the author of The Fingertips of Duncan Dorfman, a novel about Scrabble for middle-grade readers, as well as the young-adult novel Belzhar. Her short fiction has been published in The Best American Short Stories and The Pushcart Prize. Wolitzer often writes about the challenges facing aspiring artists and American gender politics through the decades.

In addition to the public reading on the uptown campus Monday, Wolitzer will visit creative writing classes led by English department faculty members Peter Cooley, Zach Lazar and Tom Beller.

“Wolitzer is one of the wittiest, most observant writers on women and work,” said Molly Pulda, administrative assistant professor of women’s literature at Tulane. “Her novels capture the artistic promise of youth and the inevitable compromises that come with adulthood: family, financial struggle and evolving friendships."

Students, including Tulane sophomore Emma Weisner, are also excited about the visit.

“Meg Wolitzer’s fiction explores essential questions with a unique and moving voice,” said Weisner. “What does it mean to be a woman? How do I continue to grow and change while maintaining my sense of self?”

Wolitzer’s public reading will be held Monday (March 6) at 7 p.m. in the Kendall-Cram Auditorium of the Lavin-Bernick Center.
