A procession of Newcomb College juniors makes its way past the senior class for the start of the May Day celebration on Newcomb Quad in 1953. Each spring the festival, which started in 1897, saw juniors honoring the soon-to-be graduates with a themed performance that included dancing around a maypole and weaving ribbons. In 1953 the theme was “Louisiana Purchase” and Courtney Estabrook played the role of Gov. William C. C. Claiborne.
