The Innovation Award recognizes scholars/investigators who develop and explore novel ideas, approaches and insights through interdisciplinary scholarship to address clinical, public health or societal challenges. The recipients of the award are Tony Hu, Weatherhead Presidential Chair in Biotechnology Innovation at the School of Medicine and director of the Center for Cellular and Molecular Diagnosis, Tanika Kelly, epidemiology professor at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and director of the Center for Public Health Genomics, and Nora Lustig, economics professor at the School of Liberal Arts and Samuel Z. Stone Chair of Latin American Economics.

A study conducted by Ehab Meselhe, professor in the Department of River-Coastal and Science Engineering, Kelin Hu, a research assistant professor in the department, and Laura Manuel, a PhD student in the department, confirms that using upper river diversions will reduce the magnitude and duration of spillway openings, which will improve the effects on wildlife, seafood production, coastal communities and economies. Tulane, the NFL Alumni Gulf Coast Chapter, and the Louisiana Department of Health will host a mobile vaccination clinic from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Jill H. and Avram A. Glazer Family Club at Yulman Stadium on the uptown campus. Green Wave football standouts and former NFL players Curtis Baham and Lionel Washington will join Rickey Jackson, Buford Jordan, John Fourcade and other NFL alumni at the event. Eligible individuals ages 5 and older can receive free Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines, including first and second doses as well as boosters. The event will feature giveaways, including Green Wave basketball tickets, free concession food and activities for children. Science “The early gains really do persist,” Thomas Eisele, professor and director of the Center for Applied Malaria Research and Evaluation at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, says of a study that found babies and infants who slept under malaria-preventing bed nets in the late 1990s and early 2000s still had a significant survival advantage 20 years later.
Bloomberg Law Mary Olson, associate professor of the Department of Economics and director of Murphy Institute’s Health Policy Program, says that the “speedy review targets” by the Food and Drug Administration have raised some concerns that the agency “might sacrifice drug safety.”
Offbeat Magazine Recordings from the late 1940s and early 1950s by Vernon “Dr. Daddy-O” Winslow, the first African American radio disc jockey in New Orleans, are now a part of the Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and Jazz — a division of Tulane University Special Collections — and are available online via the Tulane University Digital Library.
