Outreach Tulane, the university’s largest and longest running student-led community service event, took place on Saturday, Aug. 27, across the New Orleans area. The event, facilitated by the Tulane Center for Public Service and the Community Action Council of Tulane University Students (CACTUS), included hundreds of Tulane volunteers and numerous community partners.

Tulane has been recognized on Forbes’ “America’s Best Employers by State” list. The list, compiled in partnership with market research company Statista, surveyed 70,000 Americans working for businesses with at least 500 employees and divided the list into 51 rankings, including the District of Columbia. Surveys were conducted anonymously and considered an employee’s working conditions, salary, potential for growth and diversity. Check out the list.

Thanks to a National Institutes of Health grant, a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry system will support the Tulane Proteomic Core Facility team conduct research to better understand disease processes and to find novel biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis. The facility team is directed by Jia Fan (seated), assistant professor at the Center for Cellular and Molecular Diagnostics at the School of Medicine. Read about the system.

And the people who suffer from long-term or post-treatment Lyme disease may be frustrated that they don’t get better sooner, or at all. In this episode of On Good Authority, we talk to Monica Embers, associate professor of microbiology and immunology and director of Vector-Borne Disease Research at the Tulane National Primate Research Center, to learn how the bacteria that causes Lyme evades detection, making treatment or management difficult in some cases.
