Ellie Dylan, who graduated from Newcomb College in 1974, co-directed the award-winning documentary film, On Our Own Island. The film chronicles the love story of Dylan and her husband and his journey battling cancer. The Global Port Cities project takes place Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. in the Diboll Gallery of The Commons. The Port Cities project is an initiative led by School of Liberal Arts Dean Brian Edwards alongside his longtime collaborator, Moroccan playwright, novelist, and journalist Driss Ksikes. Underlying this project is the premise that there is a particular relationship between creativity and port cities such as New Orleans; Tangier, Morocco; and Naples, Italy. Anne Lafont, art historian and professor at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris, will present the 2022 Sandra Garrard Memorial Lecture, “Tying, publicizing, adorning: The buttons of Toussaint Louverture” at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Freeman Auditorium in the Woldenberg Art Center. The lecture will address a series of buttons that once adorned the uniform of Haitian liberator Toussaint Louverture and which are now preserved in the Cooper Hewitt museum in New York.
